Leo the Emperor?

leonardo-dicaprio.jpgThe latest power deal in Hollywood hints at a movie which will see Leonardo DiCaprio playing the Emperor of the Roman Empire. Producer Scott Rudin now has the movie rights to “I, Claudius”, the historical drama written by Robert Graves and that was turned into a 13-part miniseries in 1976. Derek Jakobi played Claudius, a member of the royal family that schemed his way to the position of Emperor by hiding his mental brilliance behind physical impairments.

Rudin has just finished making “Revolutionary Road” with DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. It’s believed that the producer will reunite with DiCaprio on the “I, Claudius” project and hire “The Departed” screenwriter William Monahan to adapt Graves’ book. Several other Hollywood movie studios wanted to make a movie from the novel but ultimately it was Rudin who won the battle after paying $2 million dollars for the screen rights.

leonardo.jpgWhen he wasn’t busy starring in movies like “The Departed” and “Blood Diamond” actor Leonardo DiCaprio had been busy making his own documentary about the dangers of global warming on the environment. DiCaprio produced, co-wrote and narrated “The 11th Hour”, a documentary about the consequences of human civilization on the world, the effect that global warming is having on the planet and what societies around the world must do to reverse the future consequences before it is too late. Many notable scientists, world leaders and heads of business like physicist Stephen Hawking and former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev are featured in the movie discussing their views on the changing climate. A self-proclaimed environmentalist, DiCaprio and the film’s two directors, Leila Conners Petersen and Nadia Conners, will travel to the Cannes Film Festival later this month to present their movie to the world’s film critics and celebrities. Regular movie patrons will also have the chance to watch “The 11th Hour” this coming fall now that Warner Independent Pictures has stepped in and purchased the distribution rights to the film.
